Every year, all the IB students come together in a final presentation for their Middle Years Program. These presentations represent a year of hard work on a personal project of the students’ choice. At the presentation of these projects, students, teachers, and representatives from Tuckahoe and Tucker as well as the students’ own parents come to witness the culmination of these projects. The topics of these projects can range from learning a new skill or trade, creating something, or following a personal interest. An example of each of these types of projects is becoming a certified scuba diver, following and documenting different types of African art, creating an outfit based on literature, and following family history.
Each project is focused on a global context like Identities and Relationships, Orientation in Space and Time, Personal and Cultural Expression, Scientific and Technical Innovation, Globalization and Sustainability, or Fairness and Development. Each student also has a teacher-sponsor to mentor and provide advice on specific problems that students come across. Throughout the process, a reflection log is kept so that every single mini accomplishment can be tracked and every failure can be analyzed. At the end of the project, a paper analyzing the process and reflecting back throughout the project is created to document the development. This is then sent to graders outside of the school and assessed based on certain criteria. Lastly, projects and papers are turned in and students get to sit back and learn from other students’ experiences.
